Began the day with an hour of Swahili where we learned the body parts. I was feeling smug because askari Bura (yay I learned how to spell his name!) taught them to me last week. We did learn a few new ones so I have a few more words to recite to myself. One of my classmates also got a CD of bongo flava (local Tanzanian music) which I’m listening to right now, it is different and upbeat so I’m really enjoying it. Anyways we had an hour break between Swahili and our culture class which focused on the sections, kinship, and age-group structure in maasai society. We only had WE this afternoon and each pair presented on the papers we were given yesterday. Mikayla and I presented on the winter time feeding preferences of giraffes with a particular focus on browsing utilization and feeding rates. We exceeded our allotted time by five seconds but besides that I feel we did well.
On my run I was counting how much longer we are here on Moyo (heart) Hill and it worked out to slightly less than a month. I can’t decide if the time has gone by quickly or really slowly. Waiting between field trips goes really slowly yet non-program day seems to show up really often. The rest of the afternoon I chatted with the camp manager Moses and did some core while other people did yoga with an instructional DVD. Tomorrow we go to Ngorongoro Crater for a game drive and to hear a guest lecture by one of the prominent people in conservation for the area. We are leaving at 7am which means breakfast is at 6:15….many people were not thrilled about that and I must admit to being very glad that I am not on cook crew tomorrow morning, they are starting at 5:15. So my bag is packed except for my lunch and filled water bottles which I will get tomorrow. For now I’m going to learn how to dance in the style of West Africa and then sit by the fire.
ps- the pictures were taken in Tarangire National Park
