Not much to report today. I decided to skip the morning run because as soon as I posted last night I ended up talking to people on skype chat for quite a while. Tomorrow though its going to happen especially because I heard from this morning’s runners that watching the sun come up over the mountains is spectacular. Breakfast bell was rung promptly at 7:30. After breakfast we met in the classroom to hear a lecture on all the wonderful parasites, infections, and traumas that could occur to us while here as well as an outline of the medical facilities available and evacuation options. Our professors then talked about the overall case study question, the courses, expectations, and schedule for the coming few weeks. Lunch then we welcomed our final student (and my other banda (house) mate) and loaded into the land cruisers and went to see the neighboring town Karatu. Getting back for our 6pm curfew the usual card games, soccer, slackline, and hackysac games were played until dinner.
Everyday after dinner we have one student give a RAP (reflection, announcements, presentation). The reflection is just something to make the group appreciate the fact that we are in such a unique place with such great opportunities and not to take anything for granted. Tonight our RAP student read a quote and a said a few things about her own experience here already. Her presentation was really fun. She called it “The Snort Game.” Everyone stands in a circle with their lips completely covering their teeth. To play each person turns to their neighbor and snorts or makes very loud noises trying to make their “opponent” show their teeth (laugh, smile etc) and get them our while “the attacker” still keeps their teeth covered. As people “get out” the circle gets smaller and smaller. To say the least it was a ridiculous and hilarious game. I am not ashamed to say that I got out early and had much more fun laughing at those still playing. Swat people prepare, we will be playing this when I return.
